Survivor Pool Strategies

Survivor pools are another way to add even a little more fun to your NFL season. You pay a one-time entry fee and you only need to pick one game per week (not even against the spread - just the winner). And depending on the number of entrants in your pool, you stand to win a great deal if you are the last survivor left standing in the pool. Of course, despite sounding straightforward, these pools are far from easy to win given you can not use the same team twice, you are competing against many others, and let's face it, there are always a few shocking upsets each season.

Core Survivor Rules & Mechanics

  • Straight-Up Wins: Forget the spread. Moneyline win probability is your only metric.
  • Single Use: Once a team is chosen, their future value (FV) drops to zero for your entry.
  • Elimination: A loss, tie, or canceled game kills your equity instantly.
  • Goal: Outlast the entire field of entrants to capture the entire prize pool (sum of all entry fees).

Your strategy should shift depending on pool size, leveraging game theory to maximize your Expected Value (EV). Here are some common approaches:

  • Small Pools (<50 entries): Maximize raw win probability. Focus entirely on surviving the current week. Do not hedge or hoard future value.
  • Medium Pools (50–500 entries): Optimize the balance between current win probability and future value. Pivot to favored mid-tier options early to hoard elite teams for high-leverage weeks.
  • Large / Massive Pools (500+ entries): Treat this as a massive Guaranteed Prize Pool (GPP) tournament. Winning requires fading the public chalk. If 40% of the pool backs a heavy favorite, your EV spikes by picking a pivot team. If the chalk busts, you instantly eliminate a massive chunk of the field.

At Football Sharps, we have recently built a Survivor Pool Analyzer that looks at the entire season of games and provides a week by week path for selecting teams. This system uses a combination of data from our Power Ratings, our NFL Futures and our proprietary deterministic model for betting analysis.

The system will provide you with two options.

  • Greedy Mode: Solves strictly for immediate survival. It isolates the current week, scans the board, and returns the team with the absolute highest raw moneyline win probability. It operates with zero foresight, leaving future weeks to sort themselves out later. This approach is useful in pools with a smaller number of entries.
  • Opportunity Cost Mode: Solves for long-term equity. When multiple high-probability options exist in a given week, the algorithm calculates each team's future value (FV). It dynamically preserves elite teams for high-leverage weeks later in the season, optimizing your path across the full 18-week schedule.

This second option is what should differentiate your entry in medium to large size survivor pools. Check out our Survivor Pool Analyzer now. Best of luck this season!
